IDEA Course Design Objectives

This course was built around the IDEA course design model.

Primary IDEA Design Objective:

“24. Developing specific skills, competencies, and points of view needed by professionals in the field most closely related to this course.” (i.e. computer networking)

Secondary IDEA Design Objectives:

“21. Gaining factual knowledge (terminology, classifications, methods, trends).”

“22. Learning fundamental principles, generalizations, or theories.”

This course seeks to help you build a foundation for eventual professional certification at the level of COMPTIA’s Network+ entry level industry-standard certification, including: the OSI model, network protocols, network topologies, optical fiber, wireless, and copper transmission media, token-ring and TCP/IP networking, local and global voice, data, and video communications,  internet and virtual private networks, and the basics of network maintenance, troubleshooting, and security.

Network+ Certification Incentive Award:

Check with your employer, most will pay for your COMPTIA Network+ certification.  Many will pay for your first attempt, even if you do not pass the test, others will reimburse you only if you pass the test.

As an incentive to encourage you to seek Network+ certification, your instructor will pay for your Network+ certification (a $145 value) if you take and pass the Network+ test between November 21 and December 12, 2003 and your employer refuses to pay for your certification.

How do I claim my Network+ test fee refund from my insructor?

To claim your incentive award from your instructor, provide written documentation to your instructor by December 15, 2003 that you took the Network+ test between November 21 and December 12, 2003, and passed. Include a signed statement naming the employer that has refused to pay for your Network+ certification, or state that you do not have an employer.  Students who attempt but fail the Network+ test will not have their test fee reimbursed by the instructor.

Free transportation to Cincinnati will be provided. We will be leaving from Combs at 8:16 and will be back in Combs by 6 pm.  If you are not 21, are not sponsored by an employer, fail to pre-register, or otherwise are unable or choose not to go on the Cincinnati field trip on November 6, your alternate assignment is to write a 2-3 page report of a field interview you will have conducted with a networking professional holding at least a bachelor’s degree on the topic of “A Day In the Life of A (Interviewee’s Job Title)”.  For example, “A Day in the Life of a a Network Engineer,” “A Day in the Life of a Network Systems Administrator,” “A Day in the Life of a Networking Equipment Sales Engineer,” etc.  The field interview report is due on Wednesday November 19, 2003.  Students who take part in the Cincinnati field trip will receive their 100 points based on the day’s travel and Trade Show participation and are not required to submit a field report.

Grading Breakdown

Term Grades are based on Total Points: A 90.0+% (900-1000 points), B 80.0+% (800-899 points), C 70.0+% (700-799 points), D (60.0+% (600-699 points), E below 600 points. There is no curve. Your point total determines your grade.

Attendance Policy:

Ours is an internet course with classroom instructor support. Your attendance in class is sought and expected but not required. You are responsible for all the material listed in the Course Schedule whether covered in class or not, and you are held accountable for timely and complete submission of all work and any last minute changes whether or not you attended class. In short, "we didn’t cover that in class" is not an excuse, and "I wasn't in class that day" isn't an excuse either.

Late Work and Online Test Retake Policy:

The penalty for late submission of Hands-On practice sets is 20% off per day or fraction of a day late. You are always free to turn in work EARLY for full credit. Always turn in what little you may have ready by the deadline for partial credit. Partial credit is always better than no credit.  Weekly online chapter quizzes will be available inside rolling weekly windows.  To help you learn more, you are welcome to take and retake the chapter quizzes at any time and as often as you want within the weekly time-window provided.

Extra Credit and Make Up Policy:

Extra credit and make-up work are not available.

Work Effort Policy:

You are encouraged to have fun, to read and research widely, to consult all resources available to you, including for example the internet, programmer forums, your instructor, other students, and alternate textbooks freely, and to ask and answer questions within the field and online programming community at large, your peers and of course your instructor.

All work you submit for grading must however, in the end, be the result of your own personal effort. Any help you sought must be freely and generously acknowledged in your documentation.

Special Needs:

Students with special needs must notify the instructor of their need for an accomodation within the first two weeks of the start of the semester.

Incomplete Policy

Incompletes for the term are issued only as a last resort. Requests for incompletes must be substantiated by copies of court orders or a medical slip from a physician that documents the dates of the student's incapacitation. The ordinary vicissitudes of life are not valid grounds for an incomplete.

It is the student's responsibility to procure and route all paperwork for incompletes.
