Network PC Adapter Installation and Configuration

Objective: Install a network adapter in a PC and configure the PC for service on a TCP/IP network.

Project Dependencies: You will need the field service CD-ROM your created in Operating System Installation - Part 1, and the network adapter your removed from your PC in Part 2.  Your instructor may assign you as a team member of a small group of 2 or 3 people depending on the availability of lab equipment.

Tasks:

1. Determine the type, manufacturer, and model number of your network adapter.  Search the manufactuer's web site for the latest updated driver for this network adapter.  Download the latest driver from the vendor website and copy this driver to a floppy disk.

2. Break your PC case open and install the network adapter. Protect your network adapter from ESD (electrostatic discharge - a ruinous 20,000 - 70,000 Volt zap) and make sure the adapter is fully seated in its slot.

            3. Boot the PC and Let Plug & Play find and configure the network adapter for you.  If prompted for the location of a network adapter driver, supply the driver you copied from the vendor website to your floppy.  If not prompted for a driver, let Plug & Play complete the installation, then manually update the network adapter driver from the Network Icon of the Control Panel.

            4. Add the TCP/IP protocol stack and a network client to your network configuration.  See your instructor for the TCP/IP properties to use. In addition to your network TCP/IP address, you will need to set your NetBIOS computer identification, and specify the network location of the domain name server (DNS server), and default gateway.

5. Ping a network device, for example a printer, a server, or another network PC, from the command prompt of your newly-networked PC. As with other steps, document your results with a screenshot.

6. Document the setps required to complete your installation in your write up.  Include screenshots. Note: You are encouraged to work closely and consult freely with your team members on this project.  However, you must prepare and submit your own individual write up even if you worked in a group in this project.
