Network Printer Setup, Upgrade and Administration

Objectives: (1) Set up a networked PC to print directly to a networked printer using the latest driver and a logical interface provided by the printer vendor; (2) use a network printer administration tool to discover, upgrade the firmware of, and administer network printers.

Project Dependencies: Your instructor will provide you with the MAC (Media Access Control) hardware address, IPX/SPX or TCP/IP address of the printer you are to print to and service. Your instructor may assign you as a team member of a small group of 2 or 3 people depending on the availability of lab equipment.  This project requires a networked PC and a networked printer that uses JetDirect technology.

Tasks:

1. Determine the type, manufacturer, and model number the network printer you are going to administer. Search the manufacturer's web site for the latest updated driver for this printer.  Download the latest driver from the vendor website and copy this driver to a floppy disk.  Hewlett-Packard driver updates can be found on the World Wide Web at: http://www.hp.com/go/support.

2. Install a new a printer for your PC for the vendor and model printer assigned to you by your instructor. Use the Control Panel Printer icon. Use the latest available printer driver, and temporarily set the printer to print to port LPT1. Set the Spool settings to print directly to the printer using RAW format spooling and disable bidirectional control. Document your work with a screenshot.

3 Ping the network printer assigned to you to verify its network presence. Document your work with a screenshot.

4. Telnet to your assigned network printer and verify and document the firmware revision, ip address, and gateway address. Document your work with a screenshot.

            5. Install the network printer administration tool HP Download Manager for jetdirect - version A.03.01 or later on your PC. This tool is available from the vendor's support.site. Unzip and install this network printer administrator tool on your PC.

            6. Use the HP Download Manager to upgrade the firmware of the printer assigned to you by your instructor and no other. Document your work with screenshots.

7. Find the file ja255en.exe on the HP support site, or elsewhere on the internet.  This file is a self-extracting zip file that contains the Network Printer Wizard v2.01 or later.

8. Download and install the network printer installer on your PC, and then run it.

9. Check the IP address and gateway carefully against the values you obtained from the telnet connection to the network printer.

10. When prompted for a port name, select one that is short (13 or fewer characters), has no spaces in its name, and is descriptive of the printer type and model and its physical (room) location.

11. When prompted for a printer driver, select the latest printer driver you downloaded and installed earlier.

12. Upon completion of the installation wizzard cycle, print a test page from your PC to the network printer. Attach this test page to your report.

13. Detail the setps required to complete your installation in your write up.  Include screenshots to document the procedure and your work..

Note: You are encouraged to work closely and consult freely with your team members on this project.  However, you must prepare and submit your own individual write up even if you worked in a group in this project.
